Rule of law

The concept of rule of law is contentious. Various version have been advance. However, the content of most includes some of the following:

  • Obligation to publish laws

Historically this is reflected in the requirement that laws be published.

  • No one is above the law
  • The laws must enjoy some degree of acceptance by those bound by them.

The World Justice Project ranks governments on their commitment to the rule of law. The factors measured include whether basic laws and information on legal rights are publicized, the extent of corruption, the timeliness of judicial hearings.
